No, our ISP had a meltdown and our backup ISP didn't kick in properly, resulting in a three hour outage and several smaller outages over the course of about 36 hours.
We just got approval for a big-ass internet connection from one of these two ISP's, and keeping the other as a backup, and the VP's understandably want to know what the point is of spending all that money if the backup functionality isn't going to work.
The solution to all of this is to implement a horribly complex external routing protocol called eBGP, so that in the event of an internal ISP problem we can actually manipulate the internet's AS-path information to direct traffic away from the bad link to the good one.
Trouble is, no one in our company really knows how to implement such a thing. Worse, the person who is closest to knowing how to do it is me.
